Excerpt:

Sunday, September 13

11:43 a.m.

His restless spirit roamed the old abandoned schoolhouse on 143 North Chancery Lane. Anger swept through the once promising student like a deadly tornado, his ghostly energies directed towards the girl.  Tormented, the bodiless soul swooned through the empty hall flicking the light switches. Raging. Furious. Feeling lost. His fury shuddered every corner of the structure. There would be no calm inside the old schoolhouse or in the town of Beckford until he reached her. Only then would his soul rest in peace.

11:43 a.m.

Jayden Morgan stumbled as she got out of the cab on North Beckly Street. Panic like she’d never known before welled inside her throat. What she felt was indescribable. She had some nerve coming back to the town of Beckford–a place so tiny it barely existed on the map. She knew she made the right decision to flee from her stepdad, however, sadly leaving her mother behind. Something bad happened. She didn’t remember what it was, but she had to disappear for a while before it was too late.

“You okay, missy?” the white bearded cab driver croaked, disturbing her thoughts, as he called out to her from the window after she’d closed the passenger side door. His eyes narrowed in suspicion.

“Um…yeah, I’m good. Thanks,” she lied quietly, slinging her leather backpack over her shoulder. A flicker of apprehension coursed through her veins as she proceeded to the curb. She stopped and stared blankly at the number on the door in front of her. Number 242. Yep, that’s the house. But for some reason it looked different than she’d remembered. Then again, she had difficult remembering a lot during the past week.

The old Victorian-built house with the peeling yellow paint and oddly decorated green porch belonged to Mrs. Rae Morgan, her estranged grandmother on her father’s side. The only black relative she knew.

Jayden had called her out of the blue last night and told her tearfully, she had no place else to go. They weren’t that close, thus she only remembered staying there once a long time ago. Not sure when. Everything was a blur since Jayden’s…incident. She’d stayed in Beckford once with her mom, when they were evicted from their home in Buffalo. That was another story. But that’s all she remembered. She couldn’t recall what year she’d stayed in Beckford.

She had developed selective amnesia. A silent curse.

Jayden looked around her. The quiet street appeared darkened by the overcast, grey sky.

This place looks like a ghost town.

Half of the homes were boarded up and looked abandoned. Debris littered the other side of the street. There were no cars parked on the curbs. She sucked in a deep breath and zipped up her black and pink hoodie to shield her chest from the autumn chill in the air.

What am I doing here? How could I have forgotten how creepy this town was?

“Sure you got the right place?” the cab driver yelled out to her—as if offering her a last call to get back in the cab and drive to some place more—alive.

“Nobody in his right mind asked to be taken to the ghost town of Beckford,” he had joked to her earlier on their ride from the St. Catharines’ bus depot. It’s a town full of ghosts acting like they’re alive and a bunch of quack seers who can’t tell the living from the dead—imagine that! Can’t believe people still live in that town.” He shook his head at the recollection.

“This ol’ town had a booming railroad industry back in the day. It was settled by loyalists in the 1800s—now it’s all rubble and dust. They’re trying to build it back up and construct homes and developments and entice people to buy cheap new homes here ’cause it’s close to the border,” he had tsked. “Anything for money.” He also gave her a little rundown of the town’s history to Jayden’s surprise. This part of Ontario was a haven for escaped African American slaves also in the 1800s. The famous underground railway had a stop right in St. Catharines, half hour from Beckford. The town had tons of old pulled up tracks and abandoned train stations and buildings. Jayden guessed he was bored and wanted to keep himself awake after a long shift on the job.

“Why can’t you just go up to the ghost and tell ‘em they’re dead and to go away?” Jayden had asked him while they drove through the countryside to town.

“You crazy?” he had called out to her, eyeing her through the rearview mirror as if she lost her head. You can never tell somebody they’re dead if they don’t already know it. Remember that! Or that’ll be the last thing you do.”

New Review Communion by Jean Blasiar & Jonathan Marcantoni

A mixture of magical realism and war-set family drama revolving around a little girl, Gem, who’s ability to communicate with animals assists her in her search to locate her father, who has gone missing in action at the height of World War II. It is at once an intimate portrait of a small Ohio town affected by war and an emotional epic about the enduring love between husband and wife and father and daughter.

  • Paperback: 280 pages
  • Publisher: Savant Books & Publications LLC (October 1, 2011)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0983286140
My thoughts:

Edward and Melanie are a young married couple with a very young daughter.  They now live with Edward’s parents.  Edwards father Fred is a nice man, however Abigail his mother , is not such a nice person.  She doesn’t like the name Gemini as she associates it with the pagans.  She comes across as cold-hearted with it comes to Gem and Melanie.  Abigail doesn’t understand Gem and the things she does.  When Gem deals with her father listed as Missing, Abigail can not cope and thinks she is faking.

The story is touching.  I adored Gem and how she and her mother coped with Edward going off to war.  Melanie stays strong for Gem’s sake and concurs major hurdles in her career as an artist.  Her and Gem both are subject to mental abuse from Abigail.  I cringed every time Gem had to deal with her.  Back during the 40′s it was common for some people to act the way Abigail acted when she didn’t agree or understand things.

I enjoyed the tenderness Gem had with the animals and her bears.  She is such a caring child and never gives up hope her father will return.  You had to have hope your loved one would return.  Melanie staying true to her marriage to Edward was refreshing.

When Gem goes to see the General who moved in neighborhood was by far one of my favorite parts of the book.  He never gave up either and when he went to look for Edward you could feel the relief in Gem and Melanie.

I enjoyed reading the devastation that was left in France after the war.  The descriptions were so life-like you could picture yourself walking along looking for american soldiers.

A truly amazing book, one I will re-read again and share with my oldest son as he loves WWII history.

Widowmaker by Cristyn West and Elena Gray

A horror movie that causes people to die?

Something so scary that people watching it are bleeding out of their eyes, having heart attacks and ripping their own faces apart? The docu-horror film called Terror in the Trees sounds harmless enough, doesn’t it?
That’s what FBI Agent Derek Bolder thought when he was given the mission to go to Hollywood to bring back the film. He hadn’t yet understood the sheer evilness contained within it…but he soon would.

Derek’s ex-fiancée Jill, the beautiful and sexy film executive, is dead set against giving him the film. It would ruin her career. What lengths would she and her nasty boss go to, to protect their reputations even as the bodies pile up?

The Evil Within, a Horror Anthology by Cristyn West, Amber Scott, et. al.

The hiss of hot breath coming from inside the coat closet.
The noxious odor of plastic smothering your face as you fight to breathe.
The nagging feeling that someone is watching your every move…waiting.
Vengeance. Misplaced trust. Pure evil.

After reading these nine chilling tales this Halloween, how many times will you soothe yourself in the dark thinking “there are no monsters”?

Fierce Dawn: A ParaRealm Novel by Amber Scott

Snarling teeth, glowing eyes. Someone–something–is after her.
The man who haunts her dreams enters her reality, claiming she’s transforming into a changeling–not quite immortal but no longer human. Except nobody wants this change. Not humans, not immortals and least of all her.
Battle lines are drawn and blood spills as the two fight not only for her life, but for mankind’s as well.

Halloween Jack and the Devil’s Gate by M. Todd Gallowglas

When the Devil’s Gate comes down, releasing all the hordes and legions of the darkest realm to roam the earth any night they wish, and jack o’ lanterns no longer keep the dark creatures at bay, only the last three descendants of the mythical Jack of the Lantern can save the world from the Devil and all his kin.

Based on one of the oldest Irish legends of Halloween, HALLOWEEN JACK AND THE DEVIL’S GATE is a Steam Punk adventure story for all ages that will carry you to the heart of how we protect ourselves on the darkest night of the year.

Guest Erin Quinn & Giveaway

Please help me welcome Erin to the blog today.  Not only is Erin talented she is also charming to talk to.  I love helping her promote her work.  Be sure to enter the giveaway as well below.
Babs….Have you always wanted to be a writer?
Literally, always.  I remember the first time I “got” what it meant to write.  Fourth grade and I had to write a descriptive paragraph.  When I turned it in, the teacher accused me of me copying it from a book.  (she wasn’t a very nice teacher, I have to add and I could write a book about all the mean things she did–but then again, I could write a book about a lot of things, ha ha).  Anyway, though I was secretly flattered that she thought it good enough to be plagiarized, I was very upset that she doubted my literary expertise and integrity.  :)   My mom–who’d watched me labor over multiple drafts–went down and read her the riot act on my behalf and that was that.  My paragraph made it into the school paper and my course was set.
Babs…..What would you like your readers to get out of Mists of Ireland series?  For those that have not read your series yet can you briefly explain about it?
Here is a brief explanation of the series:

The Mists of Ireland series takes readers to Ireland to meet the families MacGrath and Ballagh.  For centuries these two families have been entwined in love, jealousy and the mysticism surrounding an ancient tome called the Book of Fennore. Surrounded by lore and superstition, this ancient Book wreaks havoc on humanity—but when it falls into the hands of the MacGraths and Ballaghs, it ignites powers within them that make them its most formidable enemy.  Reviewers and readers alike have called the Mists of Ireland series “filled with fascinating characters, wonderful detail, and the beautiful scenery of Ireland” and “An enthralling read. Quinn’s mélange of paranormal, time travel and romance is outstanding!”

Babs…..Do you have a current project in he works?
I do.  Two actually.  Nope, make that 3.  I have a novella which comes out in October in the Touch of Twilight anthology.  My story is called Shivers at Twilight.  I am working on a new paranormal romance series that I’m very excited about, but I’ve yet to propose it to my editor so I’m not ready to talk about it yet.  AND I have this book that I call my “weird” book that I am dying to write.  As soon as I get my proposal done, I will be focusing on that.
Babs…..Do you have a ritual when you are writing?  ie coffee, music, food etc
Coffee is a must no matter what I’m doing.  I should have bought stock in Starbucks way back when because I’m a hopeless addict.  I like silence when I write because, for the most part, I tell myself the story as I go along (which means I’m basically talking to myself.  It can be quite embarrassing when I’m in public–not that it ever stops me, ha ha)
Babs…..Hobbies outside or writing?
Reading.  I love to read.
Babs….What book or books are you currently reading?
Just finished Ruthless by Anne Stuart which I really liked and I’m looking forward to reading the rest in the series.  Also loved When Beauty Tamed the Beast by Eloisa James.  Wow.
Babs…Favorite drink?
Non alcoholic:  Sobe’s lifewaters.  Any flavor
Alcoholic:  Cosmopolitans
Babs…..What is your favorite ice cream?
Mocha chip (Haagan Daas)
Babs….What is your favorite food?
Mexican.  Give me cheese and a billion calories and I’m there.
Babs…Anything else you would like to add?  ( links to any blogs/sites to follow etc)
Yes!  you can find me everywhere.

My Review:

Georgie Gail is a switchboard telephone operator in Brenhm Texas. With funny gossip and some times serious information, Georgie brings Texas to a whole new era.  With the help of the uptight rough Ranger, Lucious they gather up a pack of train robbers.    The webs we weave.

I enjoyed the fun read. I felt a little rushed towards the end.  I would have liked to have seen more.   I thought the love with the characters was a little flat, but overall everything flowed as it should.  The characters were well done and worked together even the bad guys turned out pretty good.

I was given this book for free by Litfuse for an honest review.

Hide’n Go Seek blog tour stop & giveaway

Welcome Dale to the blog today and for offering a giveaway ( see details below )

Hide’n Go Seek (Psychic Visions, Book #2)

by Dale Mayer

BLURB:

A twisted game of Hide’n Go Seek forces an unlikely alliance between a no-nonsense FBI agent and a search-and-rescue worker.

Celebrated search-and-rescue worker Kali Jordon has hidden her psychic abilities by crediting her canine partner Shiloh with the recoveries. But Kali knows the grim truth—The Sight that she inherited from her grandmother allows her to trace violent energy unerringly to victims of murder. No one knows her secret until a twisted killer challenges her to a deadly game of Hide’n Go Seek that threatens those closest to her.

Now she must rely on FBI Special Agent Grant Summers, a man who has sworn to protect her, even as he suspects there’s more to Kali and Shiloh than meets the eye. As the killer draws a tighter and tighter circle around Kali, she and Grant find there’s no place to hide.

Are her visions the key to finding the latest victim alive or will this cruel game of Hide’n Go Seek cost her…everything.

EXCERPT:

Twenty minutes later, Kali made her way to the kitchen. She fed Shiloh on the deck in the morning sunlight. Running her fingers through her shoulder-length hair, she remembered last night’s painting. She headed to her studio to take a look. She’d almost reached it when apprehension washed over her.

The door was closed.

She never closed the door after painting. It wasn’t good for the wet canvases, besides, the room only had a small window so the paint fumes built up fast. A frown wrinkled her forehead. Had she simply forgotten? She had been deadly tired last night.

Bolstering her courage, she pushed the door wide and flinched as the fumes rushed out almost stinging her nose. “Oh gross.”

Holding her breath, Kali crossed to the window, shoving it as far open as it would go. Fresh air surged into the small space. She’d love a huge studio, except painting wasn’t exactly a full time career for her – no matter how much she’d like it to be. It was a release for when depression and madness overcame her soul. Maybe later, when she no longer did rescue work, she could indulge her art as a creative hobby instead of as an outlet of pain and turmoil.

Walking around the easel, Kali stopped midstride.

The painting stood where she’d left it. With surreal and strangely enticing clarity, blacks and purples and browns popped off the canvas. Heavy paint splotched at places, then thinned and stretched across the top.

She stepped back and frowned. Up close, besides the heavy amount of paint, the picture resembled a distorted nightmare. Not surprising. Still, she caught a glimmer of an intentional design. She tilted her head and looked at it from a different angle. Nothing changed.

Sniffing the air, Shiloh ambled into the doorway.

Kali smiled down at the dog. “Not very sweet smelling, is it?”

She glanced back at the jumble of colors and stilled. There. She studied the abstract mess, letting the colors move and form to reveal the image hidden within.

Shivers slid over her spine.

Oh my God.

No way.

Kali blinked. It was.

There was no mistaking the image of a person buried under small bushes, civilization of some kind crouched on the horizon with a series of rough rock formations soaring behind the bushes.

“What the hell?” she whispered.

Kali was not a great artist, by any means. Blind escapism kept bringing her back to the process because it worked. She painted with wild abandon. The paint slapped on canvas with no thought discharged her emotions. For some reason it always worked.

And it always looked like shit.

This, on the other hand, was ingenious. Sure the subject matter was gruesome; however, given her volunteer work, not unexpected. Especially after finding the letter.

The artistic abandon was still there. The paint was so thick in spots the picture was almost three-dimensional. The terrain had depth and movement. The light was dark and terse, yet still shone with gruesome clarity—and way beyond her artistic abilities.

“It’s fucking brilliant.”

It was also scary as hell.

My Review:

Katie Ann has lost her husband to an English woman whom he moved in with.  Then he was killed in a tragic accident.  He never knew Katie was having a baby as she did not want Ivan to feel he had to come back just for the baby.  She wanted him to come back because he wanted to.

Katie and Martha ( her English neighbor ) are like mother and daughter.  They have a few things in common, both are widows and both are afraid to hurt again.   Martha kept her feelings quiet about the man she loved.

Will both women be bold enough or brave enough to let the men know they are in love with them?  Can they find peace and be happy once again?

I loved this book.  It is the 2nd book.  I have not read the first one, but I will.  I enjoyed seeing the women come about and start to change and tell people what they want.  The best thing I got out of the book…no matter what we think we know about our lives and how it will be, GOD just might have a different plan for us and you just have to go with the flow.

I was given a free copy of The Wonder of Your Love from Litfuse for an honest review.

Guest Ashley March & Giveaway

Today I have the honor of Ahsley March stopping by today.  Below you will find her guest post, a surprise giveaway & at the end my review of Romancing the Countess.

The Appeal of the Independent Heroine

Thanks so much to Babs for having me on the blog today as I continue the celebration of my latest release, ROMANCING THE COUNTESS!

Just as readers are often drawn to certain types of characters, writers are often drawn to writing certain types of characters as well. For me, I have a tendency to write about independent heroines. This term independent does not refer to the heroine’s status in life—someone who is financially secure and depends on no one but herself—but rather to the heroine’s attitude and underlying strength.

In my newest book, Leah George has been keeping the secret of her husband’s affair for nearly a year. When he dies, she discovers that she is free to pursue her own happiness if only she makes that decision and is willing to live with the consequences. ROMANCING THE COUNTESS is not a story about how an independent woman moves on after her husband’s death; rather, it is about how a woman discovers her own strength and chooses to become independent as she finds a second chance at love. It is a story of self-awareness and realization, of weighing choices and taking risks.

As we all know, women in the 19th century did not have the same privileges and rights that most of us do now. There is something immensely satisfying and empowering in seeing our heroine refuse to conform to society—or, if she does, doing it in a manner where she stills gets her way in the end. There is a strength in the independent heroine that makes us want to cheer her on. We want her to be happy. We want to see her dreams come true, and we want to see her work to make these dreams come true, too. Yes, her actions might result in consequences not necessarily wonderful (as Leah found in ROMANCING THE COUNTESS), but at least they were strong enough to take that path.

However, the strong, independent heroine only remains appealing when we see her vulnerability. If all we saw in our heroine was that she remained stubborn and strong no matter what, I think we’d quickly grow annoyed with her. But when we learn of her vulnerabilities—such as Leah’s desire for a child, or her self-esteem that has been wrecked by comparing herself to her husband’s lover—then we begin to care about her more deeply. She becomes real, because we see not only her strength, but her heart as well.

It is a heroine such as this that deserves the wonderful hero that has also stolen our hearts.

 Giveaway:  Ends 10-24

What is it about a strong, independent heroine that appeals to you as a romance reader? Is there an actual woman, either in the past or present, who gained your admiration? If so, why?

One random commenter will be chosen to win a copy of my newest book, ROMANCING THE COUNTESS (open internationally)! Also, find out how to win the ROMANCING THE COUNTESS Book Tour Grand Prize of 50+ romance novels by visiting  Ashley March Website!

My review:

Leah George was always the proper daughter and wife.  She tried to make everyone happy that is until she saw her husband being unfaithful.  Again, she does what a proper woman does, sucks it up and pretends all is right in their marriage until the day he dies.  Leah feels relief and free at the same time.  Now she can do what she wants to do and say what she wants something she is not used to.

Sebastian just lost is wife in a carriage accident while grieving realizes she took his best friend for her lover.  Heartbroken over losing her and now finding out she was unfaithful he was in morning.

Sebastian and Leah have known each other for a long time.  They can relate to each other as both spouses have cheated on them.  As they grow towards loving each other it was remarkable to see how they grew into a real lasting relationship.  They do have their ups and down like we all do.

Ashley has done a great job with this book.  I have not read her fist one “Seducing the Duchess” , but I have it down to read.  This is an author worth looking into.
