and his father, the Machiavellian Earl of Bossley, until she can safely return to London. Then fate intervenes and Thorn becomes the focus of a heated manhunt. Soon both of them are running out of places to hide. With the shadow of the gallows looming on the horizon, the impossibility of their love becomes ever clearer.

THE SEDUCTION OF SCANDAL is quintessential Cathy Maxwell. She once again brings readers a traditional historical romance novel imbued with contemporary sensibility and the touches of humor that have made sixteen of her books national bestsellers. Among them are her earlier Scandal and Seduction novels, A Seduction at Christmas, The Marriage Ring The Earl Claims His Wife, and His Christmas Pleasure.

ABOUT CATHY MAXWELL

The author of twenty-five novels and four novellas set in the early 1800s, bestselling novelist Cathy Maxwell’s new book, THE SEDUCTION OF SCANDAL, the fifth of her Scandal and Seduction novels, has just been published. Each of the others—A Seduction at Christmas, The Marriage Ring, The Earl Claims His Wife, and His Christmas Pleasure—has appeared for multiple weeks on The New York Times Mass Market Best Seller list.

Born in Olathe, Kansas—“a picture perfect Midwestern town”—Cathy’s family roots go back to the Mayflower and the Revolutionary War. She has long called Virginia home, noting she is “a Virginian by choice, but a Kansan by nature.” She worked in television news as a broadcaster before spending six years in the Navy. She attended Air Force intelligence school, worked in the Pentagon and did a tour with Naval Intelligence.

Cathy began her writing career in 1991 while her children were still small. “It wasn’t easy,” she says. “I worked full time, my husband travelled, we had three kids, I volunteered and I was writing from four until seven every morning.”

Now, twenty years later, she is the author of sixteen national bestsellers and her novels appear regularly on The New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists. A rarity in the book world, Cathy has published every one of her novels with the same publisher, Avon Books. These include the bestsellers In the Highlander’s Bed, Bedding the Heiress, In the Bed of a Duke, The Price of Indiscretion, Temptation of a Proper Governess, and The Seduction of an English Lady.

Cathy is a member of Romance Writers of America, Washington Romance Writers, Virginia Romance Writers, and Novelists Inc. She is a frequent featured speaker and panelist nationally and locally at writers’ conferences, libraries and special events, where she focuses on writing, fiction and the romance genre.

Cathy lives in rural Powhatan County, Virginia with her rescued dogs Rico and Maya and with her son during college breaks, and is just a few miles from her horses, Duncan and Dinero.

*RT Book Reviews **Joyfully Reviewed
First things first:  The most important news I want everyone to know is the meaning behind the K.I.S.S. and Teal label on the book’s cover.  Avon Books has donated $25,000 to ovarian cancer research and has also committed to donating 25¢ from the sale of each book, physical and eBook, in the “K.I.S.S. and Teal” promotion between 8/30/2011 and 2/28/2012, up to an additional $25,000 toward programs that support ovarian cancer patients and their families. More important, the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer are printed on the back page of every September book.

Ovarian cancer is a killer cancer just because there is no early diagnostic test.  Of the 21,000 women who will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year, 15,000 will die because the cancer has been discovered too late.  It is important we learn the signs and share them.  And for your information, those signs are:  bloating; pelvic and abdominal pain; difficulty eating or feeling full quickly; and urinary symptoms (urgency or frequency).  I know, I know, too common, right?  You are correct.  But if you are feeling any of those symptoms on a daily basis, please, get yourself to a doctor.  Or in historical terms, hie thee to a doctor!

I know you are busy.  I know you are juggling far too many tasks and heading into the doc for bloating isn’t something you want to do right now.  I know money is tight.  But please do it anyway.  Think about the statistics–15,000 out of the 21,000 diagnosed with ovarian cancer will not survive.  Better the doc tells you it is nothing to worry about than finding yourself one of the 15,000 ovarian cancer patients who will not beat this disease.

And so what do you get for your money if you help the cause and buy THE SEDUCTION OF SCANDAL?

Well, readers met the heroine Corinne in HIS CHRISTMAS PLEASURE.  She is the cousin betrothed to Lord Freddie Sherwin whom she cannot, will not, never, ever, forever abide.  She is determined not to marry him, even if it means running away.  Of course, that is where the real fun begins.  And isn’t life like that?  You finally decide to take a desperate measure whether it is finding a new job, joining a dating service, enrolling the kids in a new school and suddenly things you didn’t plan for begin to happen.

For Corinne, the thing that happened she didn’t plan for was being shot and captured by a highwayman.  Can it get more romantic than that?   (Did I mention he is wearing tall boots and he has a fabulous horse?  Can it get better than that???)

In THE SEDUCTION OF SCANDAL, I play with what it means to be true to oneself.  There have been many comments in the press about it being a Robin Hood story, but I didn’t see that.  I have a hero who is caught between being loyal to someone who has been his guardian, who has educated him, and sustained him, and doing the right thing–even if he could hang for it.

Certainly he didn’t plan to find himself nursing an heiress or entertaining her fantasy of being a free and independent woman!

I had fun writing the book.  I adore willful characters.  It’s fun to throw them in a room together to see what happens.

“Ain’t No Bull” Book Tour

The Fiction Teacher

First off, I’d like to thank Babs for having me today. I don’t get out much, so you’ll have to excuse me if I seem a little giddy. Okay, so it isn’t easy to convey giddiness in text, but trust me, I’m bouncing all over the place! (Did you feel it that time?)

Before you hit that little x button at the top of your screen, I promise there’s a point to my post today. You see, I’m a writer. “Well, duh…of course you are, otherwise we wouldn’t be here about to dig our eyes out of our sockets to avoid reading this inane post!”

Really, I am a writer, but first and foremost, I’m a reader. I think every author has to be in love with reading books as much as they’re in love with writing them. It kind of goes with the territory, you know? Books, characters, plots, and romance. I love it all.

Not everyone shared my fascination with the written word. There were many times I had to protect my books from an irate mother who thought they were ruining my life. Friends and relatives who tended to call my books “books for desperate housewives” or “sex books”. You name it, I’ve heard it, but it never stopped me from reading and enjoying the stories clever authors created.

You’d think that writing and being published would change some views, but it doesn’t. I’ve even found myself warning potential readers about my books because of the heat level. Why? Are they so hot they’ll scorch your eyeballs? No, well, sort of, but not really. I just don’t want my sister-in-law’s mother to read my books and think, “My daughter has married into a family of perverts” or my cousin-in-law’s grandmother to have a heart attack and die because I used toys in my story…Like I did in Ain’t No Bull.

However, I’ve had to accept the fact that if a reader is a reader like me, they’ll get to that part of the book, eyes wide, heart pounding, and put the book down with a blush. After a few minutes, they’ll pick it up again and keep reading.

Cause that’s what readers do. Right? Have you ever had to do that? I can’t even tell you how many times I have!

Excerpt:

Izzy held her dagger against her leg. She didn’t want the little nymphs to see the glint of steel in the moonlight. The bull rolled his eyes, the whites showing as foam gathered around his mouth. Poor thing was freaking out, and why wouldn’t he? The nymph holding his ring was hanging off it like a booger. Didn’t they know how much pain and discomfort that caused the cattle?

“This isn’t any of your business, fat ass,” one of the nymphs snarled. She had red hair and great big breasts that made her look like the prow of a ship.

Izzy raised an eyebrow, fighting the urge to grin. “Fat ass? Hon, I hate to say it, but you have no room to be calling me a fat ass when you’re hauling udders around like that,” she drawled, relaxing the grip on her dagger.

The nymph gasped. “You bitch!” she growled, running for Izzy.

Yay! A fight!

Looking from the dagger she’d reflexively armed herself with to the frail nymph, Izzy sheathed it again. It would be more fun to fight the nymph hand-to-hand, which sounded so wrong in her head. Nymphs didn’t fight. They were too busy getting all touchy-feely with

their chosen elements.

Shrugging, Izzy stormed forward. Going by the red hair, Izzy expected the burning hot hands that grabbed her ponytail. She let the fire nymph get a good grip before she reached back and punched the ever lovin’ shit out of her.

Eyes rolling to the back of her head, the nymph fell. Too bad her ass wasn’t as big as her tits. She might’ve landed a little softer.

Four of the other nymphs skipped over waving their hands as they called their elements. Within seconds, Izzy was drenched in water which quickly froze, and the earth opened up to trap her foot.

Laughing with delight, she grabbed one of the water nymphs and threw her into her friends. The girls went down like bowling pins giving Izzy enough time to pull her foot out of the ground before they got to their feet.

She ducked as a fireball blasted past her head. It melted the ice on her body, but singed some of her hair. Miffed that her hair wasn’t going to look so great tomorrow, Izzy tossed her dagger at the fire nymph. The hilt hit the nymph’s temple, knocking her out in one shot.

Apparently the other nymphs took exception to the casual maneuver because the tiny, hair-pulling, scratching females swarmed her.

“Ouch!” Izzy shouted as one of the little botherations pulled her head back by a hank of hair.

She didn’t want to kill the women. She didn’t know what they could possibly want with the bull and wouldn’t have bothered them except for one of them calling her a fat ass. So her weight was a sore spot, so what? But she wasn’t going to let the little shits get away with it.

No longer playing nice, she threw out her elbow catching one of the women in the throat. The nymph gagged and staggered back. Izzy bitch-slapped another nymph hard enough to knock her out, and greeted the last one with a knee to the face. Her blood rushing through her veins at the excitement of the fight, Izzy looked around for more.

Moans, groans, and sniffles from the fallen women punctuated the air. Peering into the night, she could see the last conscious nymph lead the bull from camp. Izzy’s blood raced with exhilaration and a need for battle, which meant that Little Bo Fool was going to lose her bull. Grinning at her own goofiness, she pondered the battered nymphs.

Guest Jenn LeBlanc & Giveaway open Internationally

Hi everyone! Thank you for having me today Babs!

My name is Jenn LeBlanc and I wrote a little book called The Rake And The Recluse. You might have heard of it because it has been creating quite the stir on the interwebs, not necessarily for the story, though I’m told it is wonderful, but for the images included.

My novel is fully illustrated. It is also meant to be read as an eBook, with more than one hundred photographs embedded within the text. I’ve been chatting it up on this blog tour for a bit and I decided to do something a touch different here. I would like to talk about the quirks in my book.

The first deals with the fact that my heroine, Francine, can’t speak at the beginning of the book. She had learned some sign language from a childhood friend and she tries to use that to communicate by teaching her Duke some signs. It was a challenge to write a story where one of the characters can’t speak, but being a visual person I believe I was able to add the right amount of description to bring the story to life.

I loved describing the signs and the interaction between the two main characters and adored the way her lack of voice brought them so close together in a time where men and women weren’t allowed in close proximity to one another.

The research behind sign language was really interesting. I found out that, for the most part, many of the signs are similar across the different languages but the alphabets are not. I actually had not considered whether there were different languages in signs. The really interesting fact about current sign languages is that American Sign Language has more in common with Irish Sign Language and French Sign Language than it does with British Sign Language even thought the two share a common language. How odd is that? The fact that they are largely universal (in those I researched) was very interesting.

The history of sign language and the history of the schools and terminology used in Victorian England was also important. I placed the sister of one of my characters at the Braidwood Academy for the Deaf in England to illustrate the advance in thinking in the Victorian era. It wasn’t the best thing, but was certainly better than what became of deaf people previously. The Braidwood Academy catered to the more well to do in British society but one of the instructors left and started the first public school in London for the Deaf.

I also researched Bethlem Hospital for the Criminally Insane which was a horrible place to end up, mental deficiencies or no. It was commonly referred to as Bedlam, and the nickname has carried across the centuries. Fortunately for those with mental difficulty Bedlam was cleared out and restructured beginning at the end of the 18th century as the truth of the conditions came out as well as advances in psychiatric care.

So there are a couple little things about my book I haven’t yet discussed. Here are a couple little things I have discussed: The illustrations.

The novel is available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, All Romance eBooks and on iBooks from your iThingy.

Thanks again for having me!

Review Dragon In The Mist by Nancy Badger

**

A LOCH NESS ROMANCE

Life without love is not worth living.

Nessía of the Loch has lived beneath the murky water of Loch Ness since ancient times. The pain of loneliness manifests in anger so strong, the entire valley shakes with earthquakes. In 1816, a Faerie queen pleads for her to cease the tremors and rewards Nessía with a human form. To stay human, she must find love. When the man she believes she loves casts her aside, Nessía responds to the betrayal by cursing the men of the MacDonald clan with the inability to keep a woman’s love. Only an act of true selflessness will break the curse.

After centuries pass, Nessía again searches for love. When Rory Hawthorn, an American scientist, arrives under the pretext of researching the earthquakes but in reality to research his MacDonald heritage and the curse, she believes she has found the perfect mate.

Amid stolen kisses, another earthquake, a steamy night of passion, and a broken heart, Nessía returns to the murky depths of the loch. When Rory dives in to follow her, he meets the green, scaly Loch Ness Monster. Assuming Nessía is in danger, he is intent on killing the monster and saving the woman he loves.

My thoughts:

Nessia is a maid at the local pub and has a lover MacDonald. As time goes on she learns from him he is never going to leave his wife over her. She just gets him by is all and nothing more. Nessia is so hurt and angry, she casts a spell on the MacDonald clan. Several centuries go by and in walks Rory, an American looking to study the earthquakes they have in town. That is his story, but in reality he is looking for some family background of the MacDonalds. Nessia has no clue at first and falls for Rory. She is lonely and really wants to find love. Rory hurts her and as she jumps into the water so does Rory thinking she is in danger with the Lock Ness Monster. Can Rory save what he has with Nessia? Can Nessia overcome the shock when she realizes who Rory is?

Again I commend Nancy on her writing skills. Nancy knows how to tell a story. I have had the privilege to read most of her books ( I got to talk to her about her Highlander books ) and they are wonderful.

The story grabs your mind from the start and you have to know what is going to happen. Will Nessia find true love or go back to the water? Will Rory let her down or come through?

The setting is remarkable and I know Nancy has done a lot of research in Scotland and that hard work has shown through this book. I could imagine being there with Nessia and her surroundings.

Review of California Caress by Rebecca Sinclair

Hope Bennett was determined to save her brother’s life. And if that meant paying notorious gunslinger Drake Frazier to take his place in a fight, she’d barter her last gold nugget. But Hope soon discovered she’d have to give the handsome rattlesnake more than riches if she wanted his help. His improper demands infuriated her; even as she luxuriated in the tantalizing heat of his embrace, she refused to yield to her desires. She’d accept his terms, then find a way to escape him… somehow…

My thoughts:

Hope has gotten in over her head when he father sends her and her brother Luke to find a certain gunslinger. How she finds him is one of the most hilarious parts of the book. Hope is trying to help save her brother from a situation he doesn’t need to be in. When she finally talks to Drake Frazier she can not stand what he has to say, but goes a long with his demands, little does he know she does not plan to fulfill her debt to him or does she?

The writing was good there were some errors, but nothing you can’t over look. The setting was so good I could picture the scenes along with the characters. one scene was described in such detail I actually thought I was riding along the trail seeing some gravesides along the way.

The characters is what I liked the most. Hope and Drake have a unique banter between them. They are both too scared to tell the other how they feel. Hope has a hard time with her own feelings and emotions. Jealousy creeps its ugly head a few times on both sides.

The story moves along pretty fast and keeps one engaged wanting more. I am adding this author to my TBR pile to read more.

Review In Leah’s Wake by Terri G Long

Be sure to get your copy while it is 99cents. It won’t last long.

In Leah’s Wake review:

Leah grew up in a privileged upper-middle class world. Her parents spared no expense for her happiness; she had all-but secured an Ivy League scholarship and a future as a star athlete. Then she met Todd.

Leah’s parents watch helplessly as their daughter falls into a world of drugs, sex, and wild parties. While Will attempts to control his daughter’s every move to prevent her from falling deeper into this dangerous new life, Zoe prefers to give Leah slack in the hope that she may learn from her mistakes. Their divided approach drives their daughter out of their home and a wedge into their marriage.

Twelve-year-old Justine observes Leah’s rebellion from the shadows of their fragmented family. She desperately seeks her big sister’s approval and will do whatever it takes to obtain it. Meanwhile she is left to question whether her parents love her and whether God even knows she exists.

What happens when love just isn’t enough? Who will pay the consequences of Leah’s vagrant lifestyle? Can this broken family survive the destruction left in Leah’s wake?

My 2 cents:

I found it hard to believe this is Terri’s debut novel. Her writing is exceptional. The basis of the book, we all need to take care and be responsible of the ones we love.

The characters and the story keep the reader intrigued and not wanting to put the book down. Anyone parent can relate to the story especially if you have teenagers. They are just everyday people like the rest of us. A good way to show the choices we make have a domino effect on others.

You will not see what is coming towards the end which is fabulous. I would highly recommend this read. You will not be disappointed.

My New Look

Well as you can see my blog has a brand new look. I have to send a huge thank you over to Justmarriedwithgraphics

Barb

Guest Dianne Venetta & Tour + Giveaway

Thanks for having me today! I have a question for you:

What does this mean, exactly?

“Given the proper care and feeding, a woman will bloom in time; her own sweet time!”

Are we talking healthy and robust bloom, or more happy and well-adjusted bloom? I guess it depends on who you ask, but for me, we’re talking emotional terms because the physical blooms will arrive on scene when they’re darn well ready—whether we gals want them to or not! Ask any teeny-boppers if they’re ready for the budding development that waits them—complete with monthly visitation and all and I’ll venture a guess they reply with a resounding no!

But emotional? Oh you bet they’re ready—already think they know most all there is to know! I do love young females…so full of hope and idealism. Tickled by the breath of spring, wide-eyed with the beautiful changes taking place in their body…

They have no idea the icy gusts of wind that await them…the relationships that will disappoint, the times life falls short of their expectations, the what ifs that grow stronger through the years. It’s no wonder we read romance novels—we’ve got to have somewhere to escape!

My current heroine, Jennifer Hamilton, finds escape in her garden and it’s not because she has a “thing” for flowers. No, it’s more like she’s developing a “thing” for the man planting them! Can you blame her? Have you met Jackson Montgomery?

Me? I’d hire him on the spot to landscape my front AND back yards. I’d even let him help me with my vegetables. Shoot, who are we kidding? My house plants need attention, too. Water—we need water in here! And while you’re here, Jackson, how about staying a while? I do have that extra bedroom…

But Jennifer’s not as sure about him. While she’s physically attracted to Jax (his friends call him Jax), she’s not sure if she can cross that line. He’s a landscaper, she’s a physician—can the two mix? And if they do, what kind of result are we talking?

Yet if she allows her doubts to win out, she may miss the chance of a lifetime to find her one true love. But letting go of a long held belief system can prove challenging—especially when there’s no guarantee it will prove to be a successful relationship.

How many women do you know would give up a future with which they feel comfortable for the uncertain promise of passion? Would you? Do tell!

And those leaving a comment today will be entered for a chance to win a copy of my debut novel, Jennifer’s Garden.

In a race against time, Cardiologist Jennifer Hamilton is caught between her mother’s dying wish and taking the risk of a lifetime with Jackson Montgomery. He’s the man hired to complete the landscaping for her new home; the venue for her upcoming wedding. Jackson’s everything she never wanted in a man, but as the job progresses, his lure pulls strong. It’s an attraction she cannot deny.

And one that puts her career on the line.

Good luck!

Giveaway: One lucky commenter will win a ebook copy of Jennifer’s Garden. Please leave a meaningful comment. This is open internationally :) . Ends 8-30-11
